IBM & NFLX TANK, SNAP FLIES UP
An Unimpressive Outing for Indexes
Still sitting on CVS calls, TBT calls and QQQ puts. Looking at SLV and NEM adds.
Today’s market was another reversal of fortune after an up open and a high +379, we fell all the way back to close +113.37 (.40%), NASDAQ was +153 but finished +37.61 (.33%) and the rest followed the pattern with S&P 500 +16.20 (.47%), the Russell +4.08 (.25%) and the biggest gainer, DJ Transports +152.21 (1.3%). Internals were just okay with NYSE 2:1 up and NAZ just 6:5. Volume was average. The DJIA was 24 up, 6 lower, with the biggest changes from IBM -54 DP’s and TRV +40DP’s. Aside from IBM there were no other double-digit losers and all the rest of the double-digit gainers were up less than 20 points.

SECTORS: Earnings were the big mover today with the aforementioned IBM miss that took the stock down last night and into the open, but that was just a warmup. By the end of the day Big Blue was pounded for a low of 116.84 and a close not much higher at $117.45 -8.07 (8.07%). Netflix (NFLX) also missed and after closing $525.42 -5.30, it plummeted to $486 and the last is $493.90 -37.03 (6.98%). The decline from the new all-time high of $572.49 just last Wednesday is just under 14%.
The big winner so far is SNAP with a surprise beat that sent the stock to a new all-time high at $35.57 and a last of $34.89 +6.23 or 21.67% on the day. And the HOMERUN OF THE DAY goes to Astrotech, ASTC, who signed an agreement to produce a “breath” test for Covid-19. The stock has been reversed twice in the past 12 years both 1:10 and 1:5 giving it an adjusted high of $800 and a close today of $1.69, but after the announcement of the joint venture with Cleveland Clinic the stock has been on a tear to a high of $6.90 and the last of $6.72 +5.01 (300%). Tomorrow ought to be interesting once the RH traders get a hold of it!

COVID

For Trading October 27th
Housing Numbers Missed
COVID, COVID, COVID!
Today’s market could have been worse, but I’m not sure how! Prices weakened overnight and then the news only got uglier as the morning progressed. Housing data took a turn for the worse and the selloff just accelerated with the DJIA hitting the low -965 around 1:45, but the bounce was nothing to write home about. We finished -650.19 (2.29%), NASDAQ -189.34 (1.64%), S&P 500 -64.42 (1.8%), the Russell -35.29 (2.15%) and the DJ Transports -275.32 (2.32%) the worst index, but not by enough to make a difference. Housing numbers (new home sales) was not only a disappointment on a month/month basis, but we also had a meaningful restatement of last month’s number from 1,011,000 to 994,000. This month we were expecting 1,022,000 and got 959,000. Tomorrow we have Durable goods, Consumer confidence, NAHB housing prices and Case-Shiller for August.

Radix Solving DeFi Risk

RADIX: THE PROTECTION AGAINST DEFI RISK
Radix is a First-layer protocol for DeFi. Currently, DeFi applications are based on protocols that are not scalable Radix has created a robust, secure, and scalable protocol for building applications and tokens. Based on existing public ledgers’ success, the Radix protocol is an unauthorized framework within which DeFi services can be developed and operated. Radix claims to solve two of the biggest problems in DeFi: scalability and security. Overall, the blockchain-based decentralized finance (DeFi) space is still evolving but offers a compelling value proposition where individuals and institutions have broader access to financial applications without the need for a trusted broker.
WHAT IS DECENTRALIZED FINANCE (DeFi)
Decentralized finance is a new financial system based on public blockchains such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. After all, Bitcoin and Ethereum are not just digital currencies. They are essentially open-source networks that can be used to change the way the world economy works. DeFi is a significant project to decentralize traditional core use cases such as trading, lending, investment, asset management, payments, and insurance on blockchains. DeFi relies on decentralized applications or protocols (dApps). By running these dApps on a blockchain, a peer-to-peer financial network is provided. Each dApp can be combined with each other like Lego blocks. Smart contracts act as connectors comparable to perfectly defined APIs in traditional systems. Rarely will you get great rewards without huge risk Just like every other industry, the DeFi system also has its own risks and issues. Unfortunately, many DeFi system users underestimate the risk associated with automated loan protocol’s impressive interest rates.
FORMS OF DEFI RISKS
When working with DeFi solutions, it is essential to consider technical and procedural risks as well. Technical risk means assessing potential weak spots in the hardware and software behind a product or service. This is important for decentralized applications (dApps) Procedural risk can be viewed as similar to technical risk, but rather than considering the product or service, procedural risk examines how users can be directed to use the product in undesirable ways that could compromise their safety.
RADIX SOLVING DeFi RISKS
DeFi is worth more than $ 8 billion. However, DeFi requires fast and minimal transaction fees and secure building systems to reach its full potential. DeFi applications must be scalable and compilable. Protocols such as Ethereum 2.0, Polkadot, and Cosmos solve the wrong scaling issues and don’t attract others, according to Piers. According to Piers, mainstream DeFi needs a bottom-up DLT platform for DeFi_ to work for both users and developers. This is the purpose of Radix.
Incentives are needed to attract developers for the DeFi ecosystem to continue to grow. Radix has an innovative incentive program for developers that allows them to take advantage of the applications they contribute to. Radix has two significant innovations: The first is Cerberus, the scalable consensus protocol. Thanks to its highly fragmented data structure and its unique application layer, Cerberus can process many transactions.
The second innovation is the Radix Engine, a developer interface that enables public ledger to be quickly deployed in a secure environment. Radix Engine is the Radix application layer. In Crypto Chat, Piers anticipates that DeFi will have more liquidity in the transition market than any other exchange in the next decade. “The key component of DeFi is how liquidity can move between applications and products.” The Radix protocol is a combination of four core technologies that solve four significant issues to the growth of DeFi. It is a platform where transactions are fast with minimal transaction fee and high security. The scale is unlimited, and connections between applications. dApps can be created quickly and rely on their ability to safely manage user resources. Builders are rewarded directly from the platform for additional contributions, both large and small. It is a platform intended to serve as the basis for mainstream DeFi on a global scale.
Each of the four technologies on the Radix platform represents a breakthrough in the Defi-related issue we want to share with the world. At a critical technology milestone last year, the Radix team overcame DeFi’s core scalability problem by using its technology to over 1 million transactions per second, a performance that exceeds five times the NASDAQ at its peak.
THE POSSIBLE IMPACT OF DECENTRALIZED FINANCE
Five ways decentralized finance can affect the universe 1. Accessing financial services across borders With decentralized finance, all you need is an internet connection to access financial services in any part of the world. There are several barriers to access in the current system: Status: citizenship, document, identity, etc. Lack of Wealth: High Entry-Level Funds to Access Financial Services Location: Great distance to business economies and financial service providers A senior trader in a financial company will have the same access as a farmer in India’s remote area in a decentralized financial system.
  1. Affordable cross-border payments Decentralized funding eliminates costly intermediaries to make remittance services more affordable to the world’s population. In today’s system, sending money across borders is too expensive for people — the average global transfer fee is 7%. In decentralized financial services, transfer fees can be less than 3%.
  2. More privacy and security With decentralized finance, users have responsibility for their assets and can securely transact without a major party’s approval. In this day and age, parents risk people’s wealth and knowledge if they don’t protect them.
  3. Censorship-resistant transactions In a decentralized financial network, transactions are immutable, and blockchains cannot be closed by central institutions such as governments, central banks, or large corporations.
There are poor governance and authoritarianism. Users can exit the decentralized financial system to protect their assets. Venezuelans, for example, are already using Bitcoin to protect their wealth from government manipulation and hyperinflation. 5.Ease of use
With plug and play applications, users can spontaneously access and use the decentralized financial without centralized finance. With a decentralized system, anyone can get a loan from any part of the world through interoperable apps, invest in a business, pay off the loan, and make a profit.

End of day summary - 09/11

The Dow rose 131.06, or 0.48%, to 27,665.64, the Nasdaq lost 66.05, or 0.60%, to 10,853.55, and the S&P 500 advanced 1.78, or 0.05%, to 3,340.97.
Traders at /thewallstreet cheered as volatility returned to the stock market.
The major averages finished Friday's trading in mixed fashion, as dip buyers provided support for the Dow and the continued tech selloff made the Nasdaq the laggard once again. The chances for another round of fiscal stimulus ahead of the election were hurt yesterday after Democrats stopped the passage of the "skinny" GOP package, but the U.S. economy looks poised for a strong rebound in Q3, corporate earnings continue to largely overshoot pessimistic forecasts and the Fed remains "all in," leaving investors to mull the cross-currents.
Similar to the days before, today's price action was technically-oriented given the absence of market-moving news and the losses in stocks like AAPL, -1.3%, AMZN, -1.9%, and MSFT, -0.7% on no specific corporate news. Apple shares fell 7.4% this week.
The difference today was that their losses were offset by relative strength in the cyclical sectors, namely industrials (+1.4%), materials (+1.3%), and financials (+0.8%). Still, when Apple and Amazon are down more than 1.0%, there must be more winners than losers to make a meaningful difference.
There were more of the latter on Friday, as declining issues outpaced advancing issues at the NYSE and Nasdaq. The information technology (-0.8%), consumer discretionary (-0.3%), and communication services (-0.3%) sectors ended the day in negative territory due to their exposure to the mega-cap stocks.
Interestingly, the S&P 500 was down as much as 0.9% intraday and fell below its 50-day moving average (3322). A broad rebound in the afternoon, however, helped the benchmark index turn positive and close above the key technical level.
In TikTok news, President Trump said that the deadline established for China's ByteDance to sell video-sharing service TikTok's U.S. operations would not be extended, Reuters reported. "It'll either be closed up or they'll sell it," the president told reporters, adding, "There will be no extension of the TikTok deadline." MSFT in partnership with WMT and Oracle have been seen as the leading suitors to purchase TikTok's operations in the U.S., Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
Subsequently, Reuters reported that Chinese officials are so opposed to a forced sale of TikTok's U.S. operations that they would prefer to see the app shut down in the U.S. over that conclusion. Reuters noted that China was willing, if needed, to use revisions it made to a technology exports list on Aug. 28 to delay any deal reached by ByteDance.
Electric vehicle hopeful NKLA continued its fight this morning with a short-seller, which now appears to be "short-sellers." Nikola issued a statement in response to claims made about the company by activist short-seller Hindenburg Research yesterday, calling the firm's report "a hit job for short sale profit driven by greed." Nikola, which added that it has "nothing to hide and we will refute these allegations," announced that it has retained law firm Kirkland & Ellis to evaluate potential legal recourse and intends to bring the actions of the short-seller, together with evidence and documentation, to the attention of the SEC. Following the company's press release regarding the response, Andrew Left's Citron Research said via Twitter, "Congrats to Hindenburg for exposing what appears to be a total fraud with $NKLA. Citron will cover half of all legal expenses. You can't SLAPP the truth away. Explains why Milton sold at $10 this June $NKLA response warrants an SEC investigation to maintain integrity of EV mkt." After having dropped 11% on Thursday, Nikola shares fell a further 14.5%.
Meanwhile, CNBC reported that AAPL has updated its App Store guidelines ahead of the release of iOS 14, with one major revision relating to game streaming services. The tech giant said in its revised guidelines that services such as Google Stadia (GOOG) and Microsoft xCloud are explicitly permitted, though under the condition that games offered in the service must be downloaded directly from the App Store, not from an all-in-one app.
Among the noteworthy gainers was Shares of ORCL, which was in focus after the company reported what Barclays analyst Raimo Lenschow called a "surprisingly strong beat" and growth on licenses despite the continued macro uncertainty. NOG, which rose 1.3% after acquiring interests in the Delaware Basin and raising Q3 production guidance. Also higher was CX, which gained 8.3% in New York after Morgan Stanley analyst Nikolaj Lippmann upgraded the stock to Overweight from Equal Weight.
Among the notable losers was AMRS, which dropped 25.8% after responding to a lawsuit filed by Lavvan against the company for patent infringement and trade secret misappropriation. Also lower was CHWY, which declined 9.8% after reporting some cats have tried to take over the company with whiteclaws.
Despite a blowout fiscal Q4 report, PTON were 4.2% lower following last night's from the fitness products and services provider.
Elsewhere stocks were higher, with the Shanghai composite up 0.79% to around 3,260.35 while the Shenzhen component rose 1.57% to about 12,942.95. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng index advanced 0.78% to end its trading day at 24,503.31.

Currency

The U.S. Dollar Index (93.35, +0.01, unch) reclaimed its overnight loss, gaining 0.7% for the week.

Treasury

U.S. Treasuries ended the abbreviated week with modest gains across the curve. The cash session started with some light selling for the second day in a row, but the market recovered from the early dip with ease.

Commodity

Gold slipped on Friday on a lack of further stimulus from the European Central Bank and the U.S. government, but for the week the safe-haven metal was set to end higher. Crude remained on track for a second weekly drop as investors expected a global glut to persist if demand weakens further with rising COVID-19 cases in some countries.

Crypto

Bitcoin is struggling to gather upside traction despite repeated defense of support at $10,000. The top cryptocurrency’s sell-off from the August high of $12,476 looks to have come to a halt near $10,000 over the past seven days.

YTD

  • FAAMG + some penny stocks +21.0% YTD
  • Spoos +3.4% YTD
  • Old man -3.1% YTD
  • Russy -10.3% YTD

CPI

Total CPI increased 0.4% m/m while core CPI, which excludes food and energy, also rose 0.4%. Those gains left total CPI up 1.3% yyr and core CPI up 1.7% yyr.
The key takeaway from the report, which featured the largest increase in the index for used cars and trucks (+5.4%) since March 1969, is that the increase in the all items index was broad-based; nonetheless, annual inflation rates are still running well below 2.0%, so there is still more noise than bothersome policy signal in the August report.

IBM & NFLX TANK, SNAP FLIES UP
An Unimpressive Outing for Indexes

Tomorrow is another day.

Tesla Beats

For Trading October 22nd
WHR HOME RUN NUMBERS
CMG, TSLA, LVS All Beat
Today’s market was another back and forth without much net change. I know that many think that 100 or 200-point moves look like a lot but on a percentage basis it’s less than 1%. With “algo’s” and buy and sell programs, that’s not overwhelming. At the end of the day the DJIA was -97.97 (.35%), NASDAQ -31.80 (.28%), S&P 500 -7.56 (.22%), the Russell -13.93 (.86%) and the biggest loser was DJ Transports -135.28 (1.14%). Market internals were 2:1 down on both NYSE and NASDAQ. Only 7 stocks were up out of the DJIA with the big winner TRV adding 45 DP’s and the loser was GS -33 DP’s. The rest were all up or down less than 20. The lack of progress on any stimulus plans seems to be the main issue, and it concerns me greatly. I’m not so much concerned with poor holiday sales, but they clearly will suffer, but the jackasses in Washington have no idea what it means to be concerned with the rent, or food, or heat, and assuming that Biden gets elected, I wouldn’t expect any action until mid-winter. #TERMLIMITS.

SECTORS: Earnings were the big movers again today with some big names putting out some big numbers. The biggest winner that I keyed in upon was Whirlpool (WHR). I should have seen that coming with all of the home repairs and upgrades, great housing numbers and easy credit terms. They beat top and bottom lines and the stock had closed $196.83 -3.10 (1.55%) but after the numbers traded up to $216 and the last is $205.75 +5.82 (2.91%). They had great metrics for their own brand as well as private label lines. The all-time high of $217.00 was way back in early 2015. Tesla beat and although their call hasn’t taken place yet, the stock had a pretty calm day (for TSLA), finishing $422.64 +.70 but after the beat the stock traded to $442.00 and the last is $436.95 +15.01 (3.5%). We’ll have to see if Elon has “one more thing” to announce! SNAP had great metrics and while it was $34.95 +6.50 this morning, it traded to $38.89 and finished $36.23 +7.78 (27.35%). CHIPOTLE (CMG) was a loser, although their numbers were good, with major continuing growth in digital and opening new stores. I personally order from there and get it delivered within 25-30 minutes (for free) and love it. After closing just under the all-time high at $1366.66 +18.19 it fell to $1250, before turning back up. I had a few members buying small odd-lots between -68 and -47, and the last is $1311.90 -36.47 (2.78%).

OIL, $40.03 -1.67, Oil has been locked into the current range and tried to break in either direction without success. morning prepper

Flurry of dealmaking
Bayer (OTCPK:BAYRY) is paying as much as $4B for U.S. biotech firm Asklepios BioPharmaceutical, bolstering its pharmaceuticals division as it continues to reel from its acquisition of crops giant Monsanto (and cancer-related Roundup lawsuits). The latest deal, which includes upfront consideration of $2B and potential milestone payments of up to $2B, is a bet on cutting-edge gene therapy, which offers the potential to cure a wide range of often-rare diseases by editing errors in the body's instruction manual. Drugmakers including Novartis (NYSE:NVS), Roche Holding (OTCQX:RHHBY) and Bristol-Myers Squibb (NYSE:BMY) have also made big bets on the industry, snapping up gene therapy makers.
Dunkin' may sell and go private
Dunkin' Donuts and Baskin Robbins chains owner Dunkin' Brands (NASDAQ:DNKN) confirmed preliminary talks to be acquired by Inspire Brands after the NYT reported on the negotiations. Inspire would take Dunkin' private at $106.5 per share, valuing the company at $8.8B, or a 20% premium over DNKN's closing price of $88.79 on Friday. While Dunkin' said "there is no certainty that any agreement will be reached," if successful, Inspire would add the new assets to the Buffalo Wild Wings, Arby's Sonic, and Jimmy John's chains that it already owns. DNKN +19% premarket. More M&A: Blackstone to buy Simply Self Storage for about $1.2B.
New Canada oil giant
Cenovus Energy (NYSE:CVE) has agreed to buy Husky Energy (OTCPK:HUSKF) in a C$3.8B ($2.9B) all-stock deal that will combine two of the largest players in Canada's struggling oil-sands industry. The combined company will have about 750K boe/d production, making it the third-largest Canadian oil and natural gas producer. it would also be the second-largest Canadian-based refiner and upgrader with total North American upgrading and refining capacity of ~660K boe/d.
Coronavirus surge, elusive stimulus deal
U.S. stock index futures are starting the week on the backfoot, falling nearly 1% overnight, as the nation reported a record of more than 83,000 new COVID infections on both Friday and Saturday. "We're not going to control the pandemic. We are going to control the fact that we get vaccines, therapeutics and other mitigation areas," White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows told CNN's State of the Union program. Meadows and Nancy Pelosi also accused each other of "moving the goalposts" on stimulus legislation in back-to-back interviews, dimming chances a deal could be reached before Election Day.
Vaccine trials
The COVID-19 vaccine being developed by the University of Oxford and AstraZeneca (NASDAQ:AZN) produces a robust antibody and T-cell immune response in elderly people, the group at highest risk, FT reports. While details of the finding are expected to be published shortly in a clinical journal, sources cautioned that positive immunogenicity tests do not guarantee that the vaccine will ultimately prove safe and effective in older people. AstraZeneca resumed the U.S. trial of its experimental vaccine on Friday after a pause due to safety concerns, while Johnson & Johnson (NYSE:JNJ) also restarted trials, saying the first batches of its shot could be available in January.
Farm purchases under China trade deal
"China has purchased approximately 71% of its farm purchases target for 2020," according to an interim report on agricultural trade from the U.S. Trade Representative. "They have purchased $23.6B in agricultural products so far this year, substantially more than the base year of 2017, and should end up being our best year ever in sales to China. It is worth noting that the Phase One Agreement did not go into effect until February 14, 2020, and March is the first full month of its effect... We already are on pace to have all-time high sales to China in beef, pork, corn, and soybeans." Go Deeper: Some are questioning the figures and the timeline.
California blackouts
PG&E (NYSE:PCG) is pre-emptively cutting power again in northern California, affecting 386,000 homes and businesses in 38 counties, or nearly 1M people. It's the fourth times this year the state’s largest utility had to shut off electricity due to high winds and extreme wildfire danger, which could spark blazes if live wires topple into dry brush. Utilities in Southern California, like Southern California Edison (NYSE:EIX), are also warning of potential blackouts.
Potential election chaos
As the threat of election-related unrest escalates in the U.S., Facebook (NASDAQ:FB) said it would implement emergency measures reserved for "at-risk" countries to bring down the online temperature. The social media giant plans to limit the "spread of viral content" and lower the bar for "suppressing potentially inflammatory posts" using internal tools previously deployed in Sri Lanka and Myanmar, WSJ reports. The tools would only be used in the event of election-related violence or other serious circumstances, though some employees are concerned it could slow down viral content and unintentionally hide legitimate political discussions. Go Deeper: Facebook will ban U.S. political ads indefinitely after November 3.
Samsung chairman and icon dies
A chapter has closed for the Samsung conglomerate following the death of Lee Kun-hee, who transformed the South Korean appliance maker into the world's biggest producer of smartphones, TVs and memory chips. He had been incapacitated for years following a 2014 stroke, leaving day-to-day operations to his son, Lee Jae-yong, who goes by Jay Y. in the West. While Lee spends about 95% of his time focused on Samsung Electronics (OTC:SSNLF), the conglomerate's most valuable arm, he formally takes the reins with Samsung on the defensive and struggling to evolve within the tech industry.

Solid Day
IBM Soars, DPZ Crushed
Today’s market was just a good, old-fashioned day without any major moves in the indexes, no earth-shattering tweets or end of days prognostications. I didn’t have any power, cable or phone last night so besides not putting out my Daily Note or closing comment, I missed the big debate. Judging by the reports I heard today, all I missed was the fly on Pence’s head! The DJIA was +122.06 (.43%), NASDAQ +56.38 (.50%), S&P 500 +27.38 (.80%), the Russell was the big winner again +17.51 (1.09%) and the Transports +72.54 (.62%) and a new all-time high! The internals were good with NYSE 3:1 and NASDAQ 2:1 positive and all I can say is that it was very a very “Goldilocks” kind of day.
Looking at adding NEM and GLD calls, and a reentry into CVS and UNG calls probably...

SECTORS: There was good news for holders of Eaton Vance (EV) being taken over by Morgan Stanley (MS) for about $7 billion in cash and stock. MS was -2.20 premarket but right after the open it started back up and finished $49.35 +.64, and since it included stock, the rise sent EV higher to close $60.78 +19.84 (48.4%). IBM also had news that sent it higher. They gave guidance and then announced that they are going to split the company up and make the pieces “pure plays” in an effort to get a better valuation for the parts. It looked great pre-market but by the open it had given up about 1/3 of the gains and finished the day up $7.42 (6%) after the early market up 12%. Same situation with REGN, trading up to $618 or so +$26, but the stock never made it there when the real market opened…and then traded back to $598 and closed $599.70 +8.00, near the lows, but still ahead 1.24%. On the downside, the DISASTER DU JOUR, was a name that I wrote about last week, WWR, Westwater Resources, which went from $1.52 to $14.50 on news that Mr. Trump had signed an executive order relating to securing “rare earth” and critical minerals last week. GILD GETS FIRST FDA APPROVAL CLAIMS NUMBERS IMPROVE
Today’s market was another back and forth. By the day’s end we were +152.84 (.54%), NASDAQ +21.32 (.19%), S&P 500 +17.93 (.52%), the Russell was the big winner +16.48 (1.65%) and DJ Transports +23.53 (.20%) with market internals 2:1 on the NYSE while NASDAQ was 1.7:1. Volume was just average. BA was the biggest winner adding 34 DP’s while BRM was the loser -30 DPs. The biggest news was the claims numbers with Initial claims falling below 800K to 787,000 and continuing fell to 8,373,000. While it didn’t do much for the preopen futures, it pared over $25.00 off Gold. Earnings got mixed reviews and I’ll go into that in the sector section below. #TERMLIMITS.
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows you to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. Yesterday’s interview with Joe Moscato, CEO of GNBT is available today at https://youtu.be/rJBtqC75g3A It’s a great story and this stock (I believe) won’t stay at these levels once there is a wider understanding of what this company actually has going for it!!

SECTORS: Earnings were the big movers again today with some big names putting out some big numbers. Unfortunately, a beat wasn’t a free ride to an up day. Cases in point were CTXS with a beat but fell to $126.00 -10.56 (7.6%) and TSCO finishing the day $137.85 -11.27 (7.5%). KMB was a split, beating revenues but missing on earnings and it was $138.79 -9.59 (6.46%), and INTC was a disappointment on several metrics with margins falling again to close $48.85 -4.65 (8.7%). Last quarter we had the same situation when it gapped down after the disappointment from $60.40 to finish $50.59 -9.81 and then continued lower for a week to settle just under $47.00. But the BIGGEST winner was ALGN, with a major beat and a gap to the upside after a close yesterday of $336.52 it finished the day $454.40 +118.40 (35%). The gap took the stock to a new all-time high by almost $60.00.

NASDAQ NAMES FLY
NOT AS GOOD AS IT LOOKS
Oh Goody, Earnings Season
Today’s market was nice to see but if you don’t own the 7 or 8 big names it wasn’t anywhere near as good as it looked. The indexes closed up, but the spread was obvious with the DJIA +250.62 (.88%), NASDAQ +296.32 (2.56%), S&P 500 +57.09 (1.64%), the Russell +11.51 (.70%), and the Transports a dismal +18.49 (.16%). Volume was VERY light, and A/D was just 3:2 on both sides. DJIA was 23/7 up with AAPL the leader adding $49 DP’s, MSFT +37, CAT +25 and the biggest loser NKE -10 DP’s. My least favorite time of the quarter starts tomorrow with several of the banks leading the names to report Q2 earnings. As you all know, I try hard not to be involved in earnings plays since they are a coin-toss at best and you can have solid ideas on what will be reported, get it right, and if the “whisper number” was higher you get stuck in a down-draft of disappointment. Not for me! And the only groups showing weakness were energy and materials.

The stock was $5.24 -5.36 (50%) in premarket trading and then it only got worse. It finished the day $$4.53 -6.51 (59%)…OUCH..I hate when the stock looks like a 2:1 split all by itself !

As I mentioned, the stock took off from under $2 to $14.50 in 4 days and then reversed and finished the day $7.46 -4.26 (36%).

Battery Day

For Trading September 23RD
NASDAQ BEST PERFORMER, AGAIN!
BATTERY DAY
NKE, KBH, & SFIX REPORT
Today’s market started off slowly and spent most of the day wavering between up and down until the final hour and managed to make a new high and have a solid close. NASDAQ was the clear strength finishing up 3 times the DJIA at +184.84 (1.71%), DJIA +140.48 (.52%), S&P 500 +34.51 (1.05), the Russell +11.71 (.79%) and the DJ Transports +85.50 (.77%). Market internals were split with NYSE 4:3 up, but even though the NASDAQ showed a major gain, the split was 1:1. Volume was slightly lower than Monday. Sales of existing homes were +2.4% and while pricing was strong, the lack of supply continues to be well below demand. This actually skews the numbers lower than if there were more for buyers to purchase.
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. It is informative and allows me to share insights as the market is open and moving. The link is: https://discord.gg/ATvC7YZ and I will be there and active from before the open and all day. SECTORS: The most “hyped” news of the day was the Tesla “Battery Day,” on the schedule seemingly forever, and the hype got so bad that even Elon Musk had to make statements yesterday trying to calm it a bit. The stock was lower all day finishing regular hours $424.23 -25.16, and after the close it rallied back to down just $14. However, I waited to do tonight’s note until there was some further action on the “show” and surprisingly, the stock has traded lower, trading $394 with a last of $406 right now (7:00pm). We’ll have to see it in the morning since it could be $375, or $425 again. Earnings from a couple of big names came after the close. Nike (NKE) beat numbers both top and bottom lines and also managed to cut S, G, & A and spent less on advertising since there were no sports on TV for the quarter and it clearly showed! The stock had closed $116.87 +3.50 (3.09%) but once the conference call was on it exploded higher trading $128 when I did tonight’s closing comment, but it has continued higher trading $134 and having a last trade now (7:15) of $131.75 +18.38 (16.12%). KB Homes also beat and was $40.50 +1.57 at the close and traded up to $43.65 and is currently $40.00 1.07. SFIX was not so great as it beat on revenues and missed on earnings. It had closed $31.38 +2.32 (7.98%) and had traded $34.00 before the call and then fell hard to $$25.90 and the last was $26.40 -2.66 (9.15%). Pretty ugly call, I guess! And the disaster du jour was a little bio named Vaccinex (VCNX) who had a negative result on a trial for Huntington’s disease. The stock had a high $12.23 in January and a recent low of $3.22 in July and closed $5.47 and opened today $2.30 and finished the day $2.24 -3.23 (59%). I hate when that happens! New Group: Air & Cruise Lines: were HIGHER with CCL +.01, RCL +1.56, NCHL +.34, AAL +.17, DAL +.36, LUV +.45, UAL +.25, HA +.08, ALK +.16, JBLU +.24, and XTN $58.35 +.16 (.27%).

OIL, $39.80 +.26, Oil was higher all day. I am looking for about another $1.00 or so before I would consider selling it for a correction. The stocks were lower with XLE $31.84 -.33 (1.03%).
GOLD $1,907.60 -3.00, opened LOWER but and gave up most of the recent gains and finished well off the low but substantially lower. I will be taking a hard look at buying GLD tomorrow. We added 4 and 2 NEM 10/70 calls @$.56 today. Average is now .98.

Q3

For Trading October 1st
Welcome to Q3
Rally Continues
PLTR Prices @ $7.25 ASAN $21.00
Today’s market was looking pretty ugly on the overnight futures reaction to the debate, but we had a deluge of positive data coming from ADP, Case Schiller, Chicago PMI, another look at Q2 GDP and mortgage applications. We moved from -200 DJIA to +100 in the last 20 minutes leading up to the open and it only got better from there. We had the Treasury Secretary from the Seeking Alpha virtual meeting talking about his conversations with Speaker Pelosi and gave some hopeful words, which added gas to the fire, and we were headed to +550 on the DJIA with the rest of the market following. When the dust settled we finished with the DJIA +329.04 (1.2%), NASDAQ +82.26 (.74%), S&P 500 +27.53 (.83%), the Russell +2.97 (.20%) and the DJ Transports the only one lower at -71.79 (.63%). Market internals were unimpressive although volume was about 30% higher but that was likely the effect of the end of the quarter. There were only 2 DJIA lower (DIS & NKE) while the biggest gainers were AXP, UNH, AMGN, GS, & HD.

SECTORS: There wasn’t a lot of sector news, but we did have some news from DIS after the close laying off 28,000 employees at the “parks” division with full time, part time, as well as executives. The stock finished today $124.00, better than last night’s reaction but still lower by $1.40 (1.12%). Micron (MU) was sold off even though they beat top and bottom lines but sellers took control and after it traded up to $52.67 on the headline, it spent the day today selling off and closed on the lows at $46.90 -3.81 (7.51%). This is why I always try to NOT trade earnings reports. This is a prime example of being right on the numbers and having it cost you money.
Becton Dickenson reported positive results on their “antigen-based test’ and was higher, closing $233.71 +8.28 (3.67%). Moderna (MRNA) was also higher during the day with a high of $75.39 but finished $70.75 +.23 (.33%). PLL who signed a 5-year agreement with TESLA for an element used in batteries that had traded $54.50 and since closing $37 +26 has had a couple of weaker days finishing the day today $23.69 -1.69 (6.66%) but still well up from $11.00.

OIL, $40.22 +.93, Oil was in a fairly tight range all day. After the oil sold off yesterday it had an “inside day” today, so no real hint to which way it is going out of this consolidation. The stocks were MIXED with XLE $30.03 -.01 (.03%).
GOLD $1,895.50 – 7.70, opened HIGHER and made a slightly higher high and a higher low, closing mid-range but down on the day. There were several “unusual options action” looking for another 10-12% on the upside before year end. We sold the balance of the 3X silver ETF calls at $2.10.

Keep in mind this company also has a tie in with elections, and an earnings report coming up that should include all the recent government contracts. The cybersecurity element is huge in an environment where it’s needed more now than ever. With a combination of good PR, a low market cap and excellent contracts in an environment where it will succeed most, this ticker is highly recommended before earnings. SECTORS: We started off the day with Retail sales +.6%, a slight disappointment, although the retail sector was mixed to higher. UAA was a big winner on the back of a new line of women’s basketball shoes and finished the day $12.29 +.63 (5.4%). FDX and ADBE went in separate directions even though they both blew away their earnings numbers. FDX helped drive the Transports to a new high today and finished $250.30 +13.63 (5.8%). ADBE went the other way after the stock moved up to $522 +25 in post market trading but when it opened this morning it could only make it to $505.50 and then fell to 478 by 11:00 and worked its way down to close $476, literally only pennies off the low and -21.67 (4.33%), and almost 50 off the extended hours high. Facebook has some problems with the FTC and that weighed on the stock and today several celebrities calling for a 1-day boycott of the social media site. Whatever it was, the stock closed near its low for the day at $263.52 -8.90 (3.3%). Profit Taking Tuesday

For Trading September 9th
PROFIT TAKING CONTINUES!
TSLA BIGGEST DECLINE
Today’s market started with the news that Mr. Trump got up early in order to continue to poke the Chinese Bear (they borrowed one from Putin, the thug) on the possibility that we would ban cotton imports and possibly blacklist another of their chip makers. Probably not going to get any traction, but you have to think that as well as AAPL and TSLA have navigated the issues surrounding their business in China, it could easily be put in jeopardy at any time. So, between that item, and the fact that the “BIG 6” wasn’t quite finished working off the run that it seems Softbank got started over the last month or so, we followed the leaders lower, rallied a bit until 3:00 and then sold off to make a new low and close -632.42 (2.25%), NASDAQ -465.45 (4.11%), S&P 500 -95.12 (2.78%), the Russell -30.71 (2%), and the best performer, DJ Transports -145 (1.29%). Market internals were soft with NYSE 3:1 lower with 3:1 down volume while NASDAQ was just over 2:1 lower. The DJIA was 26:4 lower with the biggest losers CRM -89, BA-66, GS & AAPL -56, and the biggest gainer was DIS +14 DP’s.
Tomorrow we have JOLTS (job openings) and mortgage applications to contend with. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. I also returned to my radio show today with a great live interview with the Chief Medical Officer of JANONE (JAN) and it was a great show. This is the link to the audio recording including my discussion of the market and the very exciting story of JAN’s phenomenal NON-OPIOID Pain Med! SECTORS: We started off the day with some Merger Monday action between Nikola and GM. GM taking a $2Billion stake in NKLA and NKLA planning to utilize the GM factories to build their “prospective” pickup truck. Both stocks were higher with NKLA gapping up to open $46.00 and trading as high as $54.56 and closing $50.05 +14.50 (40%), while GM opened $31.55, trading $33.33 and closing $32.38 +2.38 (7.93%). LULU posted solid earning growth and a beat on both earnings and revenues, but it just wasn’t enough as the stock which closed $349.80 -11.61 but then fell to $324 and is currently $329.50 -31.91 (8.83%). We also had a beat on both top and bottom lines at SLACK (WORK) but it too was short on guidance and “billings” and they took it out and shot it. It had closed $29.32 +.25 but fell as low as $23.27 and is now $23.85 -5.21 (18%).
FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was LOWER with TSN -.85, BGS -1.89, FLO -.52, CPB -2.36, CAG -1.98, MDLZ -1.87, KHC -1.87, CALM -.03, JJSF -2.33, SAFM -1.26, HRL -.83, SJM -3.40, PPC -.23, KR -.83 and PBJ $33.06 -.95 (2.78%).

OIL, $36.76 – 3.01. Oil was lower in today’s trading and drifted lower all day. I am looking for about another $1.00 or so before I would consider buying it for a bounce. Nat Gas was - $ .19 to $2.40 and closed a gap left on the upside that occurred when we were long last month, and I am looking at UNG (NG ETF) as a proxy to get long.
GOLD $1,943.20 +8.90, sold off early but didn’t break below the $1905 area I am using as support. It turned back and rallied and closed right near the highs. CSCO & LYFT MISS #s
Today’s market got off to a slightly higher start on the combination of CPI data and the futures, with all major indexes higher. The NASDAQ was the leader, by far, gaining almost the same point value as the DJIA on an index 60% smaller. At the close the DJIA was +289.93 (1.05%), NASDAQ +229.42 (2.13%), S&P 500 +46.66 (1.4%), the Russell +8.15 (.52%), and the DJ Transports +46.57 (.43%). Market internals were weak with the NYSE only 9:5 UP and the NASDAQ 9:7, and lower volume than yesterday. The DJIA was the same as yesterday, 23:7 but almost the entire gain was in 4 names, AAPL +100DP’s, HD & UNH +46 each, and MSFT +40DP’s while on the downside we had BA-32 and AXP -10DP’s.
Our “open forum” on Discord, which allows me to interact with subscribers and others to allow direct questions and chart opinions on just about any stock, continues to grow with more participants every day. Tonight’s closing comment video https://youtu.be/3T8DnUEKNaY SECTORS: We didn’t have much corporate news today but after the close we had earnings from both CSCO and LYFT with both reporting losses and giving poor guidance. LYFT in particular was just full of bad news telling shareholders that if the Court of Appeals did not strike down the State of California’s ruling that requires their drivers to be considered employees, that they would suspend all operations in Calif., 16% of their total rideshare business. The stock, already down from its high of $88.60 traded as low as $29.75 and is currently $30.10 -.42. Cisco (CSCO) reported a loss and gave poor guidance and this is the glaring difference between “Old” tech and “New” tech. While CSCO has fallen from an all-time high of $76, and a recent high of $58 to close today $48.10 + .91, it traded down to $44.77 and is $45.04 -3.05 or 6.34%. “New” tech stocks like AMD, NVDA, and AVGO are all at new all-time highs and up triple-digits this year. The biggest news of the late day was the announcement that TESLA (TSLA) declared a 5:1 stock split. While this is really just straight arithmetic, it does create some demand for the shares now, since when the stock split becomes effective at the end of August you would have 5 times the shares at 1/5 of the price. But it does promote the purchase of “round lots” as opposed to “odd lots.” Does it really increase demand? Not really, but most stocks (like AAPL) do seem to rise on the news. TSLA certainly did, closing $1,554,76 +180.37 (13.1%). FOOD SUPPLY CHAIN was HIGHER with TSN +.54, BGS +.53, FLO +.34, CPB +1.19, CAG +.75, MDLZ +.83, KHC +.72, CALM +.23, JJSF +.39, SAFM +.35, HRL +.62, SJM +2.25, PPC -.15, KR +.24, and PBJ $33.89 +.57 (1.69%).
BIOPHARMA was HIGHER with BIIB +3.28, ABBV +2.63, REGN +13.49, ISRG +8.09, GILD +.74, MYL -.34, TEVA -.03, VRTX +8.04, BHC -.23, INCY +1.24, ICPT +.86, LABU +.41, and IBB $134.45 +2.57 (1.95%). CANNABIS: was LOWER with TLRY -.03, CGC +.32, CRON +.20, GWPH -.80, ACB -.17, NBEV -.01, CURLF +.23, KERN -.16, and MJ $12.78 +.12 (.95%).
DEFENSE: was LOWER with LMT + .48, GD -3.60, TXT -.49, NOC -3.12, BWXT -.72, TDY +.23, RTX +.32, and ITA $170.92 -1.22 (.71%).

FAANG and Big Cap: were HIGHER with GOOGL +27.45, AMZN +77.33, AAPL +14.99, FB +3.87, NFLX +8.32, NVDA +22.82, MSFT +5.52, TSLA +190.61, BABA +6.78, BIDU +2.05, CMG +12.05, CAT -.37, BA -4.34, DIS +1.31, XLK $113.47 +2.09 (1.88%). PLEASE BE AWARE THAT THESE PRICES ARE LATE MARKET QUOTES AND DO NOT REPRESENT THE 4:00 CLOSES.
FINANCIALS were LOWER with GS +1.03, JPM -.82, BAC -.21, MS +.57, C -.41, PNC -.47, AIG -1.28, TRV -1.06, AXP -1.59, V +.93, and XLF $25.24 -.07 (.28%).
OIL, $42.67 +1.06. Oil was higher in last night’s trading before we rallied in the morning on news of production cutbacks from Iraq. The stocks were HIGHER with XLE $38.58 +.38 (.99%).
GOLD $1,949 +2.70 was a dramatic sell-off taking the gold down as low as $1,874.00 before a rally back to $1,961. While I like the gold down here, I will have to see how it trades for a day or two. I am still a bull on the metal.
BITCOIN: closed $11,665 +230. After breaking out over $10,000 we have had a “running correction” pushing prices toward $12,000, reaching a recovery high of $12220 yesterday. We had added 350 shares of GBTC @ $10.02 to our position of 400 @ $8.06, bringing our average price to $8.97, but sold 250 shares today @ $13.93. GBTC closed $13.11 +.56 today.

Nikola Under the Microscope
TIK TOK & ORCL
Today’s market started off with a rally and then just kept on going. There were several interesting stories, but no doubt that today was an up day with solid internals, including 5:1 up volume on the NYSE. The DJIA +327.69 (1.18%), NASDAQ +203.11 (1.87%), S&P 500 +42.57 (1.27%) and the biggest gainer, the Russell +39.70 (2.85%) and the DJ Transports +98.20(.87%). A/D on NYSE was 4:1 while NASDAQ was 3.6:1 and volume was moderate. DJIA was 5:1 up with no double-digit losers and the winners were UNH +47, BA +34, HD & V +28DPs. Nothing overwhelming, just a broad-based rally. It’s a great place to share ideas and gain some insights, and we’ve grown to almost 3000 members. SECTORS: We started off the day with the news that TIK TOK rejected the MSFT deal and was going to become “partners” with ORCL. It’s still somewhat up in the air as to what that actually means, but ORCL rallied on the news, closing $59.46 +2.46 (4.3%) after trading as high as $61.50. Stay tuned and I’m sure they will figure it out! Also in the news was the purchase of IMMU by GILD. While the deal gives GILD more of a portfolio of cancer therapies, the question of price paid and when they would actually make a meaningful contribution took a little off the celebration. IMMU was an $8.00 stock as recently as April and had already moved up to $42, and it closed today $83.65 +41.41 (98%). GILD is paying $88.00 or just 11 times the April price. DKNG and CZR were part of a new alliance with ESPN (DIS) as their official “Daily Fantasy Gaming” partners. DKNG finished $48.62 +7.16 (17%), and CZR was $55.39 +5.28 (10.5%). Lennar (LEN) had blow-out earnings but the stock, up from the March low of $25 to close $79 managed a small rally to $80.50 before reversing and closing $75.85 -1.63. NKLA has had some awfully bad press lately but it rallied today. After falling from $54.56 last Tuesday to close out the week $32.13 -3.42 it was trading$35.79 +3.66 before the headline that the SEC was looking into the allegations made by both Hindenburg Capital and Citron, that they had misled investors in their promotional offerings. New Highs for NAZ & S&P-500
WORK FROM HOME FEATURED
Today’s market was a little soft after the early futures, but the ISM number came in at 56, up from an expected 54.5 (50 is the magic number) things got a lot better quickly. Even a miss in construction spending + .1% v. 1.0% didn’t seem to matter. Tomorrow we have ADP Employment, Factory orders, and the Fed Beige book. The gains continued to build and by day’s end the DJIA was +216.64 (.76, NASDAQ +164.21 (1.4%), S&P 500 +26.34 (.76%), the Russell +16.71 (1.07%), and the DJ Transports +131.34 (1.17%). Volume was unimpressive and market internals were 9:5 up on both exchanges. The DJIA was split 17 / 13 UP with the big winners WMT +57, CRM =56, AAPL +34, and CAT +25 DP’s and the only 2 down double-digits were AMGN -16 and JNJ -13 DP’s. Retail has a big day of reports tomorrow!
